Fuck Social Media!

Ironic.

My job relies on people consuming my content on social media.

But still, FUCK SOCIAL MEDIA!

I cycle through phases of absolute and complete addiction to my phone.

Last year I wrote about it after my daughter arrived into the world.

This January, I slipped back into some bad habits.

Smart phones can be amazing.

We are essentially human bots already.

Walking around with a device permently attached to our hands, that can answer any question the human mind is capable of asking.

Terrible morale for lovers of a pub quiz.

Ruining a good old fashioned debate in seconds - “I’ll Google that” - fuck off!

There is plenty of content that I love.

It never upsets me when I’m consuming that.

The mindless descent into the abyss of doom scrolling is what destorys my soul.

Shortform content must be doing wild damage to the human psyche.

How am I supposed to compete with nerds from Standford and Silicon Valley, who design their apps to be as irresistible as legally possible.

OF COURSE I WANT TO SEE ANOTHER FUNNY CAT VIDEO, GIVE ME MOAAAAAAR!

To combat my addiction, I’ve got a second phone.

Whatsapp, Discord and Evernote are the only apps I have on it.

My phone with Social Media stays IMPRISONED in my office.

My rule is, I can use it as much as I want while I’m sitting in my work space, but I can’t take it out and I can’t use it during my stream.

After only a few days, I’m feeling much better.

Everytime I open my second phone outside the office, I’m still instinctively attempting to check Social Media.

BUT IT’S NOT THERE!

I don’t miss it one bit.

It makes me more mindful of the content that I am watching.

We all need a little break from time to time.

Anyway……..
