The Upper Hand #10

Last week I finished reading “The Bomber Mafia” by Malcolm Gladwell.

I’m not going to lie to you, it fucks with my head how quickly we are seeing technology advance.

Heads-Up - if the book title didn’t give it away, it’s about War!

The book focuses on the time between World War One and World War Two.

That is less than 100 years ago, my Granny was alive!

Air Bombing didn’t play a particularly large role in the First World War.

However, it became clear that bombers were a tool that was going to decide who would win wars in the future.

Officers would have heated arguements about whether to go with area or precision bombing.

Area bombing was ruthless, attacking capital cities and showing no mercy towards civilians.

The more humane precision bombing was intended to take out important targets, military bases, bridges to cities, railways, factories etc etc

The problem?

Despite the development of the Norden Bombsight, they were still not very accurate whatsoever, often as low as ¼ of a percent.

Meaning you might need to drop 400 bombs to hit a single target?

Oh and you would have to fly during the day, exposing yourself to the enemy.

Don’t get me started if there’s a few clouds.

How did they do ANYTHING?

Did I mention it was less than 100 YEARS AGO????

It was only 60 YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN!

They DIDN’T EVEN HAVE GOOGLE MAPS!!!

The Internet only became widely adopted in the 90s.

iPhones are less than 20 years old.

The drones the public got access to in the last decade probably would have been enough to win both World Wars ALONE!

Can anyone keep up with how AI is moving in the last 18 months?

It can be a little overwhelming.

What’s your predictions for the next decade?

Would you welcome a robot assistant in the house, doing all the chores you don’t want to do?

My guess is we’ll all welcome them.

Everything will be ok, as long as we don’t end up with a Henry The Hoover AI.

I can’t explain why but he’s bad news.
