What if it All Works Out?

The Upper Hand #35

Victoria Coren Mitchell headlined PITE #300 in London.

She was delightful.

Joe Stapleton mentioned that a 19 year old Victoria, had once commanded the stage at the Apollo.

When asked if stand-up comedy could have been her full-time gig, Victoria’s tone hinted at remorse.

Instead of pursuing her passion, she opted for the conventional path of college.

Whilst studying Victoria found herself with less time for comedy clubs, losing her touch and eventually losing the confidence to get up on stage.

Those nights once spent in comedy clubs, eventually became nights spent in card rooms.

Giving the success she’s had, particularly on the EPT tour, I reckon she’s made peace with her choices.

Apparently lots of parents approach her for advice when their kids want to pursue the game full-time.

Do you know what she says?

“They should do it.”

It’s the first time I’ve ever heard anyone advocate for it to be honest.

Anyone who plays Poker full-time knows how difficult it is.

My go to answer is always “no” for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, if you find yourself seeking validation for a major life decision, chances are you shouldn't make it.

Secondly, the game is VERY difficult and not getting easier.

But what is the worst that can happen to an 18 year old who attempts to play Poker full-time?

Natural selection will sort it pretty quickly.

You’ll be broke and returning home with your tail between your legs.

And this isn’t just to do with Poker.

It’s for anyone who wants to walk down an unconvntional path.

That could be acting, maybe you want to be a professional footballer, there’s a chance you want to open a nail salon, lots of people are attempting to be editors these days, or even full-time YouTubers.

Ultimately, when I say "no" to people, it's because I don't believe they truly want to be a Poker player..

I believe they just like the idea.

Of course, failure is a possibility, but if you want something badly enough, whatever it may be, it's within your grasp.

Victoria has changed the way I’ll think about answering that question in future.

What if it all works out?

Bye for now, you BEAUTIFUL Fucks!
